Join Brushwood Center at the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory for a special performance of “Suite de los Elementos”, featuring Dr. Héctor Rasgado-Flores and Chamber Musicians from the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. Rasgado-Flores was invited to write a musical suite about the chemical elements in hopes of attracting more students to study chemistry. The result is a suite for piano with 14 short pieces, each dedicated to a chemical element (H, He, C, O, Mg, Ca, Ti, V, Co, Cu, Au, Hg, Pb and Fr).

About the Artists

Dr. Héctor Rasgado-Flores is the Director of Diversity, Outreach and Success and a Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University. He is a conservatory-trained pianist and composer who attended medical school but decided instead to pursue a career in research. He received a Master’s and Doctorate in Neurosciences, and spent years performing biophysical research and teaching graduate and medical students. Contrary to common practice, he decided not to choose between his passions for research, education and music, deciding instead to simultaneously fully follow all these paths to the best of his abilities.

The Midwest Young Artists Conservatory is the largest youth ensemble music program in the Midwest serving close to 1,000 young people annually. Students hail from 84 communities in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana to study and rehearse at the conservatory in Highwood, Illinois. MYAC’s programs consist of 8 orchestras, 60+ chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles including combos and big bands, 4 choral ensembles, early childhood music classes, music theory & history classes, festivals and workshops, summer camps, master classes, and national concerto and chamber competitions.
